🧠 What is Live Migration?

  • Live Migration: Moves a running VM from one node to another without downtime.
  • Requires:
    • Both nodes healthy and online.
    • Shared access to storage (CSV or SMB).
    • Live Migration network path available.
    • Cluster decides to move the VM for a planned reason (e.g., draining a node).

✅ Live Migration requires an online, healthy source node.

If storage is suddenly lost:

  • The VM likely freezes or crashes before any graceful migration can occur.
  • The cluster sees the VM as failed, not as “ready to be moved.”

✅ Live Migration doesn’t work if:

Condition Result
CSV becomes unreachable VM crashes
Node is removed from cluster VM can’t be migrated
VM is in a failed state Failover, not live migration
Network path for Live Migration is down Migration not possible

🛠️ How to Ensure Live Migration Works

  1. Have redundant network paths for:
    • Cluster communication
    • CSV traffic
    • Live Migration (you can define this in Failover Cluster Manager)
  2. Test Live Migration:
    • Right-click a running VM → Move → Live Migration → Select Node
    • If that works, your setup supports it.
  3. Don't simulate failures by unplugging critical networks unless you want to test failover (not Live Migration).

To check or configure the Live Migration network path in a Windows Server Failover Cluster, you can use either the Failover Cluster Manager GUI or PowerShell.

🖥️ Using Failover Cluster Manager (GUI)

  1. Open Failover Cluster Manager.
  2. In the left pane, select your cluster name.
  3. Expand Networks:
    • You’ll see all cluster-visible networks, their roles (Cluster Only, Cluster and Client, etc.).
  4. Right-click the cluster name → Properties.
  5. Go to the Live Migration tab:
    • You’ll see a list of available networks.
    • You can check/uncheck which networks are used for Live Migration.
    • You can also prioritize networks (order matters — top is highest priority).

📌 Note: At least one network must be enabled for Live Migration, and the nodes must be reachable on it.
